Virgin Australia Now Lets Pets Fly in the Cabin: Everything Aussie Pet Owners Need to Know

Virgin Australia Now Lets Pets Fly in the Cabin: Everything Aussie Pet Owners Need to Know

Pet lovers, it’s finally happening! Virgin Australia is now letting small pets travel in the cabin with their owners.
It’s the first airline in Australia to do so — a big win for pet families who want to keep their furry mates close during travel.

When Does It Start?

The trial begins on 16 October 2025 and runs until 30 January 2026.
For now, it’s only available on these two routes:

  • Melbourne ↔ Gold Coast
  • Melbourne ↔ Sunshine Coast

If it goes well, Virgin plans to add more routes soon. Each pet ticket costs $149 per flight.

Which Pets Can Travel

Only small dogs and cats are allowed at this stage.
Here’s what to know:

  • Pet + carrier must weigh under 8 kg.
  • The carrier must be soft-sided, leak-proof, and fit under the seat (max 44 × 26 × 28 cm).
  • Pets must stay in the carrier for the entire flight.
  • Cats can’t yet fly on the Melbourne–Gold Coast route.
  • Only four pets per flight are allowed.

Prepare for take-off with our airline-ready Pet Carriers lightweight, breathable, and approved for in-cabin travel.

Health and Safety

Virgin Australia has introduced several steps to make flying with pets safer and cleaner:

  • Planes use HEPA air filters that refresh air up to 30 times per hour.
  • Pets will be seated in special pet zones with buffer rows for passengers with allergies.
  • All pets must have up-to-date vaccinations.
  • Staff may ask for vet clearance if a pet seems unwell or anxious.

Keep your furry mate calm and cosy with a Calming Blanket or Orthopaedic Bed — perfect for travel comfort before and after flights.

How to Book

You’ll need to call Virgin Australia’s Guest Contact Centre (13 67 89) to make a pet booking.

At the airport:

  • Staff will check your carrier and attach a “Live Animal” tag.
  • You’ll pass security with your pet temporarily out of the carrier.
  • Pets can’t enter lounges or food service areas.

Don’t forget to pack essentials like a Travel Water Bowl or a Portable Mat for comfort during waiting times.

Why It Matters

Until now, Aussie pets had to fly in cargo — often stressful and isolating. This new service means small pets can travel safely beside you, reducing anxiety for both pets and owners.

It’s also part of a growing trend toward pet-friendly travel in Australia, paving the way for more pet-inclusive holidays and services.

  1. Train your pet to stay calm inside their carrier.
